This ball confused my 6 month GSD puppy for about two weeks. At 65 lbs he can now fit his mouth around it and lift it out of the bowl. I don't let him chew on it, but it appears to be a lot of fun to chase on hardwood floors. :) This will probably work for smaller dogs, just maybe not so much for larger breeds with a habit of figuring things out quickly.

My dog received a small Portion Pacer as a holiday present (heh) and has been eating with it for about a week and a half now. So far, so good. Her eating has slowed down from less than 45 seconds to around 4 - 5 minutes or longer with the Portion Pacer. Plus, I think the additional physical and mental effort required to eat around the pacer, as incremental as it might seem, tires my dog out a bit more, which is great!

We were a bit concerned initially because the Portion Pacer ball seemed a bit lightweight and cheap, like a shiny plastic ball. But the Portion Pacer is actually designed as a hollow steel sphere with some sand in the core, which lowers the center of gravity and helps keep it "seated" in the bowl -- and ultimately prevents the ball from rolling around excessively and pushing out kibble. The stainless steel shell is not magnetic, which I'm told is a good sign of the material's grade, durability, and resistance to corrosion. So, no concerns here about the ball rusting up or cracking.

We also considered dog bowls with built-in anti-gulping prongs, but were told by the folks at our local petstore that many dogs learn to push and flip those bowls over to empty the food out. The Portion Pacer seems like a much more effective solution. Overall, we're pretty happy with it.
